Purpose

Generates a citation and link for a word defined in the online edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

Usage

As with all reference notes, the template should be inserted after any punctuation, such as a period or comma. Also note that "AHDict", which redirects to the template Cite American Heritage Dictionary, may be used in its place for efficiency.

There is only one parameter:

{{ AHDict | word }}

  • word: Word that has been defined and thus needs a citation; a required parameter.

No support for page number is included as it is inappropriate for an online citation.

Examples

  • Triumphantly she said, "Go fish!"<ref>{{ AHDict | fish }}</ref>

This produces:

Triumphantly she said, "Go fish!"[1]

and the following in the references list:

"fish". The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.). HarperCollins.

  • The class was studying geodesy, which is the part of geology that studies the size and shape of the earth.<ref>{{ AHDict | geodesy }}</ref>

This produces:

The class was studying geodesy, which is the area in geology that studies the size and shape of the earth.[1]

and the following citation in the references list:

"geodesy". The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.). HarperCollins.
